Is Mosquito Spraying Safe for Kids, Pets, and Plants?
Skeeter Beater works across Winnetka, Deerfield, and Barrington, and families ask about treatment safety before almost every first treatment. The question is reasonable.
Our treatments are safe for kids, family, pets, and plants.
What Professional Mosquito Treatment Involves
Barrier treatments target the places where adult mosquitoes rest during the day. Technicians apply product to vegetation, tree lines, under decks, around foundation plantings, and other surfaces where mosquitoes shelter out of the sun. Harborage areas are the focus. An open lawn typically isn’t a treatment target.
Treatment timing is part of the application. We treat under appropriate conditions — we’ll reschedule if rain is imminent or wind conditions would cause drift. Flowering plants are not treated.
Kids and Family
Children can return to the yard once the application has dried. That’s typically about one hour after treatment.
Once dry, treated surfaces present minimal risk during normal outdoor activity. There’s no need to keep kids off the lawn, away from the playset, or off deck furniture. If you’re home during treatment, the sensible approach is to stay inside while the technician works. That keeps everyone clear of the application area.
Pets
The same window applies. Keep dogs and cats inside during application and wait for the product to dry before letting them back out.
Dogs do well in treated yards. The practical note: don’t let them graze on treated vegetation immediately after application. Once dry, normal outdoor time is fine.
We apply the one-hour window more strictly for cats. If a pet shows vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual lethargy after being in a yard that was recently treated, contact a veterinarian.
Plants and Gardens
Barrier treatments are applied to mosquito harborage areas. Flowering plants are not treated. That’s standard practice on every property.
Vegetable gardens and edible crops should not receive direct application. If your garden is near treated areas, rinse produce before eating as a precaution. The concern is brief — barrier products break down with sunlight and heat.
Turf is generally not a treatment target for barrier applications. Any incidental contact affects surface leaf tissue.
Bees and Other Pollinators
This question comes up regularly, and it deserves more than a blanket reassurance.
We’ve found two practices make the most difference in minimizing pollinator exposure: avoiding treatment of flowering plants and timing applications to reduce contact with foraging insects. Professional application isn’t the same as a backyard sprayer, and the approach to timing and target surfaces reflects that difference.
We’ve found that clients with established pollinator gardens do well when we treat the surrounding vegetation and leave the flowering beds untouched. That’s been consistent across the properties we work on in Lake County and the North Shore.

Because we target the foliage where mosquitoes hide and leave the open lawn untreated, your kids and pets can safely return to the yard just one hour after application!
What to Expect From Skeeter Beater
On every property, the commitment is the same: treatments are safe for kids, family, pets, and plants. That’s the standard our technicians work to.
Plan for about 1 hour after treatment before heading back outside, or wait until the product is visibly dry.
We back every treatment with a 10-day guarantee. If mosquitoes return before the window closes, we come back.
