What is a Tick?
Ticks are small, blood-sucking parasites that attach to animals and humans and feed on their blood. They thrive in wooded and grassy areas, latching onto hosts as they pass by.
Ticks can transmit serious diseases, including Lyme disease, which causes fever, fatigue, and joint pain, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which can lead to severe complications if untreated.
Other illnesses, such as anaplasmosis and babesiosis, can also cause flu-like symptoms and more severe health issues.
TYPES OF TICKS
American dog tick
The American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) is a common, reddish-brown tick found in grassy and wooded areas across the United States. It feeds on mammals like dogs and humans and can transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia.
Lone star tick
The lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is a reddish-brown tick identified by the distinctive white spot on the back of adult females. It is aggressive and known to transmit diseases like ehrlichiosis and can trigger alpha-gal syndrome, a red meat allergy.
blacklegged (deer) tick
The blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis), also known as the deer tick, is a small, dark brown tick found in wooded and grassy areas. It is a primary carrier of Lyme disease, as well as anaplasmosis and babesiosis.
brown dog tick
The brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) is a reddish-brown tick that primarily infests dogs and can survive indoors, making homes and kennels common habitats. It can transmit diseases like canine ehrlichiosis and babesiosis.
winter tick
The winter tick (Dermacentor albipictus) is a single-host tick that primarily infests large mammals like moose, deer, and elk. It can cause severe infestations leading to hair loss, anemia, and weakness, especially in moose populations.

Frequently Asked Questions
When do ticks become active in the Chicago area?
Ticks become active when temperatures reach 40°F. In the Chicagoland area this typically happens in late March or early April. Most people assume tick season starts in May or June, but that 6-8 week gap is when the majority of Lyme disease exposures occur. We recommend starting tick control service by April 1.
What percentage of ticks in Lake County carry Lyme disease?
Approximately 37% of deer ticks in Lake County, Illinois test positive for Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. This is one of the highest rates in the state. Skeeter Beater's organic tick barrier spray significantly reduces tick populations on your property throughout the season.
Is your tick spray safe for kids and pets?
Our standard tick control treatment uses organic, botanical-based products, and people and pets can return to treated areas once they have dried, usually within an hour. We do not use synthetic pyrethroids as our default. If you have horses, chickens, or other animals on your property, let us know and we'll tailor the treatment accordingly.
How often do you need to spray for ticks?
We recommend bi-weekly treatments from April 1 through October 31 for most Chicagoland properties. Properties with wooded areas, backing to forest preserves, or high deer traffic benefit from weekly service during peak season (May through July). All treatments are auto-scheduled, so you don't need to call between visits.
